Effect of social media on mental health

A guest lecture was organized by the Department of Physical Education at Shri Ram College Muzaffarnagar on the topic “Effect of social media on mental health”. The program was inaugurated by lighting a lamp in front of Maa Saraswati by the chief speaker Dhirendra Kumar, VV College, Shamli and special guests Balendra Singh, Gochar Mahavidyalaya Rampur Maniharan, Saharanpur, Dr. Prerna Mittal, Principal Shri Ram College, Dr. Vineet Kumar Sharma, Dean Academics Shri Ram College.

On this occasion, Dhirendra Kumar, VV College, Shamli, while speaking on the topic, said that the negative effect of social media can harm one's mental health. It can cause depression and anxiety and reduce self-esteem. He said that social media has many positive effects along with negative effects. It helps students connect with each other, collaborate academically and access educational resources. Additionally, it has served as a platform for skill development and opened up new career opportunities for students.

On this occasion, special guest Balendra Singh, Gauchar Mahavidyalaya Rampur Maniharan Saharanpur, while explaining about the misuse of social media, said that social media and technology abuse (also called digital abuse) is defined by the National Domestic Violence Hotline as the use of technologies such as texting and social networking to threaten, harass, stalk or intimidate a partner.

On this occasion, Dr. Prerna Mittal, Principal Shri Ram College, while explaining the history of social media, said that social media started in the year 1997. This year a site named Six Degrees was launched. It was the first site that allowed users to create profiles and befriend other users. This site was shut down in the year 2001. World Social Media Day is celebrated every year on 30 June to recognize the impact of social media.

On this occasion Pramod Kumar, Head of Physical Education Department said that students get a lot of benefits by participating in sports. Their physical and mental abilities increase. On this occasion Pramod Kumar, Head of Physical Education Department presented books to the keynote speaker Dhirendra Kumar, VV College, Shamli.

At the end of the program, Bhupendra Kumar, Lecturer Physical Education Department thanked everyone and expressed his gratitude to the keynote speaker Dhirendra Kumar, VV College, Shamli and thanked all the fellow speakers.

The program was successfully conducted by Lecturer Vishwadeep Kaushik, Assistant Lecturer Physical Education Department.
