He said that National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) was established in Bangalore in September 1994 by the University Grants Commission to evaluate the performance of universities and colleges in the country. Under which, universities and colleges in the country are ranked by NAAC by evaluating and assessing them on the basis of various points and their performance. The objective of NAAC is based on purposeful and continuous improvement for high educational quality rather than being punitive or judgmental so that all institutions providing higher education are empowered to maximize their educational resources, opportunities and capabilities by improving them. He said that NAAC evaluation is an evaluation of the performance of an institution and its units. This is accomplished through a process based on self-study and peer review using defined criteria. He said that accreditation refers to certification given by NAAC which is valid for a period of five years. Currently, assessment and accreditation by NAAC is done on a voluntary basis.
